Pennridge Has Tough Opening Game
After winning the PA Region 2 Tournament a couple of weeks ago, Pennridge went on a tear through the first few days of the PA State Tournament. They won their first three games, securing an automatic bid to national regionals and the state championship round.
Since then, the newly crowned PA runner-up has dropped three contests in a row. The first two came at the hands of the eventual state champion, Spring City. That second loss jettisoned the team into the Great Lakes Regional out in Mattoon, Illinois. By luck of the draw, Pennridge was placed in the second game of the day against the Ohio state champions from Tuscarawas County.
Things didn't start off well for Pennridge, and they didn't get much better from there. A single, double, and wild pitch to open the game led to a runner at third and a run scored before starting pitcher Ryan Trauger had a chance to settle his nerves. A walk and an rbi double made, sandwiched between another wild pitch, made it 2-0. The seven hole hitter, Kyle Widder, drilled a three run homerun and the Ohio champs never looked back from their five run lead.
They got another run in the second, and three more in the fourth before Pennridge finally answered with three of their own. They did it the hard way, as they manufactured runs and capitalized on Tuscarawas' mistakes. The first run came on a wild pitch, the second an rbi groundout off of reliever Adam Mizer, and the last one came on another wild pitch.
Tuscarawas County tacked on three more before Pennridge plated their final run in the seventh on yet another wild pitch. The Ohio champions got one more in the eighth to end the scoring.
Final score: Tuscarawas County, OH 13, Pennridge, PA 4.
Tuscarawas County advances to game 8 of the tournament tomorrow night, while Pennridge will play again at approximately 1:30pm eastern time.
Spring City In Familiar Territory With Loss
The Spring City Red Sox, Pennsylvania's top legion team this summer, find themselves in a familiar precarious situation at the 2010 Mid-Atlantic National Regional Tournament. For the third straight week, the Region 3 natives have dropped into the loser's bracket on the first day with an opening round defeat.
If the Region 3 and PA State tournaments were any indication, Spring City's season is far from over. Unlike last week, when it seemed they had a favorable match-up against Region 8 champion Millcreek and just beat themselves, today's opponent comes into the tournament as one of the favorites. Brooklawn, New Jersey is fresh off its twenty-forth state title last week and downed the Red Sox 9-3 in the second overall game at Owls Field in West Lawn.
Brooklawn's starting pitcher did most of the damage for the New Jersey champions, he held Spring City in check for much of the game and nailed a booming three run homerun in the fourth inning that turned a 2-1 Red Sox lead into a 4-2 deficit.
Spring City was able to add another run before the end of the game, but not before Brooklawn got five more runs off of Spring City's relief pitching. Brooklawn advances to game eight tomorrow night against the winner of the Chesapeake, VA vs. West Lawn game. Spring City will play again tomorrow at about 12:30, where they'll take on the loser of that game.
National Regional Updates
Currently, Spring City trails Brooklawn, NJ 4-2 in the bottom of the 7th at Owls Field in West Lawn.
Pennridge is having a very rough go at things today, they trail Tuscarawas County, Ohio 9-0 in the fourth inning.
We're updating our twitter frequently with news from both tournaments, so be sure to check that out!
National Regionals Commence Thursday

Spring City will take on perennial power Brooklawn, New Jersey in the second game of the Mid-Atlantic Regional at Owls Field in West Lawn, Berks County. The host Owls will begin their tournament run against Chesepeake, Virginia at approximately 7pm.
State runner-up Pennridge will travel to Moline, Illinois and take on Tuscarawas County, Ohio in the Great Lakes Regional. That game is set to begin at about 1pm eastern time.
We'll have updates throughout the day, be sure to check back and follow the state's representatives as they vie for a World Series bid!

Spring City Downs Pennridge
Spring City and Pennridge entered Friday night's Game 13 at Bear Stadium facing much different scenarios. Pennridge, by virtue of its Game 11 victory on Thursday night, had already clinched a spot in Saturday's championship and a coveted spot in next week's national regionals. Spring City, on the other hand, was facing elimination for the third straight day following its loss on Tuesday to Millcreek. Pennridge opened the scoring, but Spring City was too much in the end, winning by an 8-2 count.
Spring City will play Boyertown Saturday at 12:30 in Game 14, with a national regional berth on the line, as well as a spot in the state title game versus Pennridge. That game will follow about 40 minutes after Game 14's conclusion.
Boyertown Knocks Out Millcreek
The host Boyertown Bears stayed alive in the State Tournament, with a 11-3 win over Millcreek in Game 12. Despite giving up an early run, the Bears put away the Region 8 champs, ending Millcreek's most successful playoff run ever. The Bears will move on to Saturday's play, facing off with local rival Spring City at 12:30. The winner will meet Pennridge for the State Championship in the game that follows.
