State Tournament Preview

Posted by Legion Baseball on July 24, 2011 at 4:58 PM

Seven regional champions and host West Lawn will descend on Owls Field in West Lawn, Berks County to take part in the 2011 ALB PA State Championship Tournament beginning on Tuesday morning.  Here is a breakdown of the tournament specifics and a brief description of each team left playing this week.

Site: Owls Field at Ted Palka Park, West Lawn

Date: July 26-30, 2011

What's at stake: Pennsylvania receives two bids into the 2011 Mid-Atlantic National Regional Tournament to be held next week in Boyertown.  Three teams, Boyertown included, will be playing next week.  If Boyertown is able to finish first or second, the third place team will also advance to the tournament.

Interesting Information: Last year's state champion Spring City and state runner-up Pennridge were both downed on the final day in this year's regionals.  Region 3 representative Bristol is located over four hundred miles from Region 8 champion Millcreek.

West Lawn (Host, Region 2)

The Owls, who participate in the Berks County League in Region 2, are this year's host team.  West Lawn was last year's Mid-Atlantic host where they went 0-2 against the Virginia and Pennsylvania state champions.  The Owls ended the regular season fourth in the seven team league.  In the Berks County League tournament they knocked off fifth seeded Exeter before being defeated by Boyertown and Shillington.

Boyertown (Region 2)

Boyertown returns to the state tournament by way of their Berks County League and Region 2 tournament championships.  The Bears were no doubt tested in both tournaments, but used timely hitting and a few come from behind victories to propel themselves further into the postseason.  Their lone loss of the league tournament came at the hands of a very talented Shillington team, who Boyertown bounced back to beat later in the day for the title.  Boyertown got solid pitching from its deep staff at the Region 2 tournament.  They were one of just a few of the teams present this week to go undefeated in their regional tournament.  The Bears downed Bath twice, Nazareth, and defending state runner-up Pennridge twice en route to the title.

Bristol (Region 3)

Bristol enters this week tournament on an absolute tear.  They have produced the state's top offense to this point and have beaten a slew of notable and difficult teams on their way to the regional title.  Bristol played their way into the Region 2 tournament by defeating former state and national champion Yardley-Western twice on the final day.  The Lower Bucks champions had the unenviable task of taking part in a regional consisting of defending state champion Spring City and longtime power NorChester.  The team put up double digit runs in each of their five games, going undefeated last week.  To win the regional title, they defeated Wayne, NorChester, Whitpain, and defending state champion Spring City twice.

Red Land (Region 4)

Red Land enters the state tournament as the the Region 4 champions.  Hailing from the Cumberland County League, the team beat an impressive list of teams to claim the state tournament berth last week.  In their first regional tournament game, Red Land knocked off highly touted Waynesboro.  They followed up that effort with a thrilling victory over Southwestern York.  Red Land suffered its lone setback of the week to eventual runner-up New Oxford in the winner's bracket final.  The team, ever resilient, topped a tough Ephrata to advance to the championship round.  Once there, Red Land rallied to defeat New Oxford twice on the final day, including a dramatic extra inning affair for the title.

Plains (Region 5)

Plains makes their return to the state tournament this week with the Region 5 title in tow.  The top seed from the Wyoming Valley League, the team battled through a tough bracket that included a league rival to make it to West Lawn.  Plains drew the host Bloomsburg on day one of the tournament and posted an impressive ten run victory to advance to the winner's bracket.  Plains played their way into the winner's bracket final by defeating Canton by double digits.  There they met league rival Back Mountain who stormed to a ten run shut out win over the eventual champion.  The team bounced back by beating a solid Green Ridge team to advance to the tournament's final day.  Out for revenge and a return trip to the state tournament, Plains handed previously unbeaten Back Mountain two losses on the tournament's final day.

Blackhawk (Region 6)

Blackhawk is also returning to the state tournament this week after a bit of a hiatus.  The team fought their way to a hard earned Region 6 title last week.  In their first game, the Beaver County team defeated Keystone Oaks before dispatching Uniontown in a mercy-rule win in game two.  Blackhawk advanced to the winner's bracket final where they won a rain soaked game against Bethel Park on Tuesday after the game was suspended Monday.  In their second game of the day, the proverbial 'throw away' game, Blackhawk was downed by league rival New Brighton.  On the final day, Shaler knocked out New Brighton and then Blackhawk took the championship with a close win over Shaler.

West Hempfield (Region 7)

West Hempfield, of the District 31 League, earned their way to the state tournament by way of winning the Region 7.  The team led off the tournament with a shut out victory over Beech Creek.  West Hempfield went on an offensive run over the next two games as they qualified for the regional title game by beating DuBois and Mifflin County, the latter by the mercy rule.  District 31 League rival Bushy Run handed West Hempfield their only loss of the tournament in the throw away game the next day.  On Wednesday, West Hempfield exploded for fifteen runs in a mercy rule championship game win.

Millcreek (Region 8 )

Millcreek continued its dominance of PA's Region 8 by once again winning the regional tournament last week in Saegertown.  The team had it's top postseason showing ever last year when they won two games, including one over eventual champion Spring City, at the 2010 state tournament.  The defending regional champs used solid pitching and great offense in their first three games.  They gave up a combined four runs in three wins over Center Township, Meadville, and French Creek Valley.  After qualifying for the championship round, Millcreek was handed their only loss of the tournament by league rival Albion/Edinboro by a one run margin.  The team's solid pitching continued on Wednesday when they won a close game over French Creek Valley.  They are the only returning regional champion to this week's tournament, though Boyertown was there last year as the host.

Championship Wednesday Matchups

Posted by Legion Baseball on July 20, 2011 at 7:31 AM

By the end of the day, seven teams will be crowned regional champion and head to the 2011 PA State Tournament to be held next week in West Lawn.

In Region 2, Pennridge played their way into the final day by scorching Nazareth's pitching staff to the tune of 19 runs in seven innings.  What makes the feat all the more impressive is that the BuxMont League champions trailed for much of the game.  Boyertown continued its undefeated run through the tournament with a rain soaked 4-1 victory over Bath.  Pennridge and Boyertown will meet back at Hostelley Field at 1pm in game 14.  Boyertown must be defeated twice on this final day.

In what could certainly be considered the day's biggest matchup, heated rivals Spring City and NorChester duked it out for a spot in the Region 3 tournament's final day.  The two teams were both widely considered to be state championship contenders coming into the postseason.  Spring City, who dropped two league tournament contests against NorChester, got the better of the Bulldogs this time around with a 10-4 win.  Bristol continued their blistering offensive display in game thirteen as they put up another seventeen runs to win it 17-10 over Whitpain.  Spring City will have to calm the state's top offense twice in one day if it hopes to have a shot at a state title defense.

Red Land kept their season alive yesterday afternoon with a close 8-7 victory over Ephrata.  The Cumberland County representatives will get another chance to knock off New Oxford, who defeated Southwestern York by three in the day's second game.  New Oxford, the tournament's lone unbeaten, must be defeated twice by Red Land on Wednesday for the Region 4 title.

In Region 5, Plains was able to bounce back and win a hard fought four run game over Green Ridge.  Back Mountain continued its impressive offensive display at the tournament with a 12-9 win which eliminated Canton.  Plains, who was defeated by ten in the winner's bracket final by league rival Back Mountain, will have to top them twice on Wednesday if they hope to return to the state tournament.

The winner's bracket final of the Region 6 tournament was postponed Monday due to rain.  On Tuesday, Blackhawk topped Bethel Park by an 11-5 score to move on to the championship round.  In the next game, a worn out Bethel Park was no match for Shaler.  The hosts put up fourteen runs and ran away with a ten run victory.  Blackhawk was one of just a few teams to drop their 'throw away' game on Tuesday when they were downed by three by New Brighton.  New Brighton and Shaler will play in game fourteen for the right to take on Blackhawk for a trip to states.

Mifflin County, who was coming off a tough mercy rule defeat in the winner's bracket final, bounced back to take the first game of the day in the Region 7 tournament over Bedford.  West Hempfield, the lone undefeated team to that point, was beaten by Bushy Run in game thirteen.  Bushy Run and Mifflin County will square off this afternoon with a spot in the regional title game against West Hempfield on the line.

French Creek Valley, the Region 8 host, bounced back from a defeat a day earlier to defeat Wilcox in the day's first game.  In a matchup between two Erie County League rivals, Albion/Edinboro gave Millcreek their first tournament loss by a score of 3-2.  Albion/Edinboro and French Creek Valley will play this afternoon with the winner taking on Millcreek for the regional title.

Action Heats Up as Regional Tournaments Reach Final Days

Posted by Adam on July 19, 2011 at 11:38 AM

As the Regional Tournaments enter their final couple of days, teams around the states have positioned themselves for a coveted berth to the State Tournament next week in West Lawn.

In Region 2, perennial power Boyertown remains the lone undefeated team in the tournament at Nor-Gwyn, following an 8-3 win over Nazareth last night.  Today, Nazareth will try to stay alive against Bux-Mont Champ Pennridge in an elimination game.  Bath, which eliminated host Nor-Gwyn on Monday, will take on Boyertown in the nightcap.  Boyertown defeated Bath 15-5 on the tournament's opening afternoon.

In Region 3, league rivals Spring City and Norchester will play an elimination game this afternoon at Norchester.  Spring City, the defending state champ, stayed alive with a 20-16 victory over Philadelphia Champ Olney yesterday, while Norchester fell into the Losers' Bracket following an 18-4 mercy rule rout at the hands of lone unbeaten Bristol.  Bristol, which has perhaps the most impressive offensive numbers in the state during regional play, will take on Whitpain tonight.  Since winning the Lower Bucks title with two wins over Yardley on the last day, Bristol has been on an absolute tear.

In Region 4, York regular season champ New Oxford remains undefeated following a win over Red Land on Monday night.  Red Land will try to stay alive on Tuesday when they take on Ephrata at Fredericksburg's Wenger Field.  In the day's second game, New Oxford will match up with league rival Southwestern York, which is coming off of an 11-4 elimination bracket victory over past regional champ Hummelstown on Monday.

In Bloomsburg at the Region 5 Tournament, the Wyoming Valley League's domination of the bracket has continued.  Back Mountain stayed undefeated with a 10-0 win over fellow league member Plains, which drops into the Losers' Bracket to take on Green Ridge this afternoon.  Back Mountain will look to stay unbeaten when it matches up with Canton.  Canton stayed alive with a 15-4 mercy rule win over West Branch champ Jersey Shore.

Out in Region 6, rain has hampered the tournament schedule.  Blackhawk and Bethel Park were set to play this morning to complete their Winners' Bracket Final.  Later today, Blackhawk will play New Brighton and Bethel Park will play Shaler, with the times to be determined by today's earlier result.

In the Region 7 Tournament at Bedford, West Hempfield stayed unbeaten with a 20-10 rout of Mifflin County on Monday.  Mifflin County looks to bounce back today against the host Bedford Hurricanes, a team they defeated 10-0 in Saturday's opening round.  West Hempfield will take on league rival Bushy Run, which needs a win to stay alive.

In Region 8, Millcreek continues to dominate Northwestern Pennsylvania legion baseball, as it has for the past several years.  Millcreek is the tournament's lone unbeaten team, following a 6-1 win over host French Creek Valley.  Today, Millcreek will take on league rival Albion/Edinboro, which stayed alive with a 15-3 defeat of Corry on Monday.  The host Creekers will play Elk County rep Wilcox in the day's other contest, an elimination bracket matchup.

New Oxford and Red Land Set To Play For Region 4 Championship Berth

Posted by Legion Baseball on July 18, 2011 at 5:47 PM

It's been a long summer for teams from around the state and country.  As the degrees on the thermometer have inched higher, so have the number of innings logged by teams in search of continuing their playoff push.  In Region 4, New Oxford and Red Land have emerged as the lone unbeatens in a tournament that has featured a good deal of offense.

New Oxford, the York County representative, took on host Fredericksburg in their first tournament contest on Saturday.  They put up the tournament's most impressive offensive display yet with a 17-3 rout.  Things got quite a bit tougher in game two as the team took on an Ephrata team that had just knocked off regional power Hummelstown the day before.  In a much closer contest, New Oxford was able to score one more run and win the game by a 10-9 margin.

Cumberland County native Red Land has posted two impressive wins so far in the tournament.  With an eleven run offensive output, they were able to top Waynesboro, a team which came into the tournament as one of the favorites for the title.  Waiting in the second round was Southwestern York.  If you hadn't heard, their participation in the tournament was in jeopardy as they waited on a legion decision to reschedule their first round game as they attended the funeral of a high school friend early Saturday.  Red Land wasn't able to slow down Southwestern's bats too much, but their own high powered offense took care of things in a 14-13 thriller.

The two teams will play this evening with a guaranteed spot in the Region 4 Tournament championship game.  The winner would have to be defeated twice over the span of the next two days and would have the luxury of playing in the proverbial 'throw away' game on Tuesday.  Check back for updates on this contest and others from around the state!

Region 7 Unbeatens Square Off in Bedford

Posted by Adam on July 18, 2011 at 1:49 PM

Mifflin County and West Hempfield will meet at 5pm today in Bedford with a regional title game berth on the line.  Mifflin County, from the Central Penn League, reached the Winners' Bracket Final with a 13-12 win over District 31 rep Bushy Run.  Despite giving up eighteen hits to Bushy Run, Mifflin County countered with fifteen of their own and had eight men reach on walks, in addition to three hit batters.  On Saturday, Mifflin County hammered host Bedford 11-1, in a game stopped after seven innings by the mercy rule.

West Hempfield, also representing District 31, won the tournament opener over Beech Creek by a 5-0 count.  On Sunday, West Hempfield jumped on Jefferson County champ DuBois early, leading 9-1 after three innings, and 11-1 after four.  Starter Zach Zimmerman went 8 2/3 innings for West Hempfield, allowing eight runs, but only four earned.  Despite late threats by DuBois, West Hempfield held on for a 13-8 win to advance them to Monday afternoon's game with Mifflin County.

The loser of the game will face elimination Tuesday, but the winner will advance to Wednesday's Championship round, no matter Tuesday's results.  Check back for updates through the day!
