Posted by Adam on July 11, 2010 at 11:45 AM

League's around Region Seven are now in the thick of their playoffs.  In Jefferson County, the four team, double-elimination playoffs began with two games.  Punxsutawney defeated Clearfield 11-8, while top seed DuBois beat Brookville 10-5.  Brookville will travel to Clearfield for a loser's bracket matchup, while Punxsutawney will play DuBois for a spot in the finals.  No matter what, Clearfield's season will continue past this round, since it host next week's regional tournament.

The Central Penn playoffs also kicked off following a similar format.  Perennial power State College got off to a good start by beating last year's regional champ Mifflin County 3-1.  Beech Creek also was victorious, defeating Tyrone 3-2.  Mifflin County and Tyrone will meet in an elimination game, while State College and Beech Creek meet in the winner's bracket final.

The Somerset Businessmen clinched one of the two regional berths alloted to the Cambria County League by virtue of their 15-4 semifinal victory over Portage.  The game was stopped after 5 innings due to the mercy rule.  Somerset will await the winner of the Bedford-Claysburg series.  Bedford stayed alive by defeating Claysburg 13-6 to force a decisive third game to be played at Claysburg.  The winner will also advance to the regional tournament at Clearfield.

Perkiomen Beats Quakertown and Mother Nature to move on to Bux-Mont Final

Posted by Adam on July 11, 2010 at 10:35 AM

The heavy rain that passed through the area on Saturday led to postponements and delays through the eastern part of the state.  The three Bux-Mont League playoff games scheduled for Quakertown were pushed back, but were able to be played thanks to the great work by the grounds crew.  Hatfield stayed alive in the first game of the day by defeating Pottstown 8-7.  Another one run game followed, as Pennridge eliminated the Doylestown Tigers 10-9.  In the night cap, eight seed Perkiomen dropped the hosts 14-4 in a game that didn't end until early Sunday morning.

Saturday's results set up the schedule for Sunday.  Pennridge will meet Quakertown in a loser's bracket contest at 3pm.  Perkiomen, the sole remaining undefeated team, plays Hatfield at 7pm.  Win or lose, Perkiomen will play for the league title.  The winner of the tournament advances to Saturday's Region Two Tournament, joining regular season champ Nor-Gwyn.

Old Rivals Set to Meet for Chester County Crown

Posted by Adam on July 11, 2010 at 12:27 AM

Rivals Spring City and Norchester will meet Sunday in Royersford to decide the Chester County Championship following their victories in Saturday's games.  Norchester ended Caln's season 11-10 in the day's opener at Ram Stadium.  Spring City then finished off West Chester surprising playoff run with a 15-4 rout.  Norchester will have to beat the host Red Sox twice on Sunday to win the title, with Spring City only needing one more victory to claim Chester County glory.  The day's results also clinched a berth in the Region Three Tournament for Spring City.  The league gets two bids, and Norchester has already qualified by virtue of its regular season title.  That tournament kicks off Saturday at Warminster.

Fox Twp 17, Bradford 16

Elk County League Champioship Series:

July 11th Fox Twp at SM

July 12th SM at Fox Twp

July 14th (if ness) Fox Twp at SM

Fox Twp and SM will play to decide the champion of the Elk County League. Both teams swept through their opening round series. Fox Twp ousted the two time Elk County League Champion Bradford in two games. The second game of the series will be talked about for many years to come as Bradford overcame a 12-3 deficet to take a 16-15 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning on a two out bases loaded infield single by Cory Viola. Fox Twp faced with the possibility of having to head back to Bradford for a series deciding game three rose to the occassion in the bottom half of the seventh. Lead off hitter Bobby Vollmer homered to right center to tie the game at 16. After a fly out Brett Quiggle reached on a single and moved to second when Jos Schlimm was hit by a pitch. Jess Cogan then stepped to the plate and delivered a game winning single to center that scored Quiggle as the Fox Twp advanced to the finals with a dramatic 17-16 victory. Since starting the season 1-4 Fox Twp has won 12 of their past 13 games to stand 13-5 on the season. They now face a SM team that has been near or at the top of the Elk County League standings all season long. SM took two out of the three regular season meetings with Fox Twp. SM won the first two games by 12-6 and 10-8 scores, while Fox won the third game by an 8-6 score. These two teams usually play some very interesting games so the finals should be pretty entertaining. Both teams will advance to the Region 8 Tournament starting next Saturday in SM. SM will be the host team in this year's tournament.
