Appeal Looms Large In Lower MontCo Final

Posted by Legion Baseball on July 11, 2011 at 9:56 PM

Sometimes even the smallest mistakes can be magnified.  That is certainly true in playoff baseball, as Lower MontCo championship hopeful Roslyn found out earlier this evening at Upper Dublin High School.  Roslyn, seeking its first league championship in decades, fell just shy of upsetting second-seeded Fort Washington in the league's title game.

Fort Washington, the defending league champions, started things off right in their first at-bat by scoring their first two runners.  The leadoff hitter Jared Zarwin reached on a base hit, advanced to second when the ball bounced by Tom Kennedy in left, and scored on a PJ Acierno RBI single.  Acierno quickly stole second, moved to third on a base hit by Max Vido, and scored when the Roslyn catcher made an errant throw on the ensuing steal attempt.

The Fort Washington Golden Generals celebrate their 3-2 Lower MontCo Title Game win.

Roslyn answered back in the second when Kevin Moran reached on an error by the Golden Generals' third baseman.  After a great catch by Video in center, Kennedy laced a base hit to put runners on first and second with one down.  A walk to right fielder Donny Baehr loaded the bases for second baseman Jordan Garnick.  Garnick hit a fly ball to right that appeared to be deep enough to score Moran.  Moran took home after the catch, beating the throw by a step or two.  After being alerted by their fans and bench that the runner may have left early, the defense successfully appealed and the runner was called out.

Things remained fairly even until Roslyn finally broke through in the top of the fifth.  Baehr led off with a walk and stole second.  He reached third on a groundout by Garnick and came home on a Kris Carr RBI sacrifice fly to left.  Eric Tidwell got things going again with a walk.  He advanced to second on a balk call and scored on an RBI basehit by Scott Schwartz.

Fort Washington got the go-ahead run in their sixth inning at-bat.  Bob Andris battled for a one out walk before stealing second.  Andris attempted to score on a base hit to right by Dan Brown but was thrown out at the plate by Baehr.  On the throw, Brown advanced to second where he would score from after an RBI single by John Miller.

Jesse Kohler went the distance for the win on the mound for Fort Washington.  He surrendered just two runs, three hits, and two walks while striking out seven.  Christian Salem went all six innings for Roslyn.  He pitched well, giving up three runs on nine hits.  He walked two and struck out four.

Fort Washington advances to the PA Region 3 Tournament which commences Saturday morning on the campus of Owen J. Roberts High School.  The tournament is being hosted by the NorChester Bulldogs of the Chester County League.

Some Familiar Names Are Back In Title Contention

Posted by Legion Baseball on July 11, 2011 at 4:28 PM

It is no secret that southeastern PA has enjoyed more than their fair share of success in the past.  The area, home to most of PA's Regions 2 and 3, have accounted for the last seven state championships (Region 6's Blackhawk took home the title in 2003).  Many of those teams that have made a name for themselves are back in the mix for league titles this week.

In Region 2, perennial power Boyertown won the winner's bracket final of the Berks County League last night and have assured themselves a bid in the tournament's final game.  Pennridge, the reigning state runner-up, has rallied from a seventh place regular season finish to earn a spot in the BuxMont title game.  Lower Macungie has played their way into the Lehigh Valley League championship, after North and South Parkland represented the league a year ago.  In the Northampton County League, returning champion Nazareth will once again play in the championship series where they will take on Bath.  In the Schuylkill-Berks, neither Southern Area or Muhlenberg represented the league last season at regionals, but both have made a name for themselves with strong postseason showings in the past (including Muhlenberg's 2000 state championship).

NorChester has returned to the Chester County League final in Region 3.  The Bulldogs have some unfinished business from last year where many people considered them to be a state final hopeful before they were defeated by the eventual state champion Spring City in the regional tournament.  Whitpain has the upper hand in the Greater Norristown league where they will meet one of the three other championship hopefuls tomorrow.  Former state and national champion Yardley-Western is back in the Lower Bucks League championship after a brief hiatus from the regional tournament.  Returning champion Fort Washington takes on upstart Roslyn this evening in the Lower MontCo league championship.  Roslyn is looking for their first regional berth in over two decades.  Out in the Main Line League, Narberth has clinched a championship bid after knocking off Springfield in the winner's bracket final.  And finally, in Philadelphia, Delaware Valley and Loudenslager face off after former champion Ivy Ridge failed to make the final round.

Check back often as we post updates on these championships and more from around the state!

Indiana Legion Wins Game One

Posted by Brad Bellas on July 10, 2011 at 6:29 PM

The Indiana County championship series got underway Sunday with #4 seed Indiana Legion beating #3 seed Marion Center by a score of 11-3.  Mike Holsinger went the distance, holding Marion Center scoreless over the final five frames to pick up the win.  Derek Shields delivered a 3-run triple for Indiana that broke open a tight game.  Game Two of the best-of-three series is set for Tuesday at 6pm in Indiana.

Bux-Mont Tournament Led By 'Underdogs'

Posted by Legion Baseball on July 10, 2011 at 3:37 PM

Over the span of the last decade or so, many teams in Region 2's Bux-Mont League have made a name for themselves and the league as a whole.  Hatfield and Nor-Gwyn have both won state titles (in 2002 and 2005, respectively) and Pennridge was the state runner-up last season.

Perhaps it came as no surprise that Hatfield was at the top of the league standings again after this year's regular season, but what was a bit head turning was that Pennridge and Nor-Gwyn were the final two teams to earn bids in the eight team postseason tournament.  One of the greatest aspects of legion baseball is that teams get to earn their way further into the postseason on the field, and Pennridge and Nor-Gwyn are once again proving that all you need is a chance.

Two full days into the tournament, and the top two seeds in the league, Hatfield and Doylestown, have been eliminated.  Pennridge, the seven seed, has won their first two games and earned a trip to tonight's winner's bracket final in Quakertown.  Surprisingly, they will be the home team for that affair, as the Nor-Gwyn Hawks have rallied to win their first two tournament games as well.

In today's other action, Perkiomen will take on Warrington and Quakertown will face off against Pottstown.

Boyertown Stuns West Lawn With Ninth Inning Rally

Posted by Legion Baseball on July 10, 2011 at 11:48 AM

The palegionball.com crew was at Bear Stadium in Boyertown last night to take in the second round match-up in the Berks County League playoffs between fourth seeded West Lawn and top seeded Boyertown.  In front of a large raucous crowd, two rivals squared off for a right to head to the tournament's winners bracket final on Sunday evening.

Boyertown, with top starter Steve Price on the mound, fell behind in the first when a two out walk to Andy Ravel.  Dylan Boll followed up the base on balls with an RBI double to deep left-center field.  The Bears answered back in the bottom of the first against Ravel, the Owls starter.  Matt Purnell laced a one out single, and after a stolen base and wild pitch, a Travis Kreitz RBI sacrifice fly knotted the score at one.

West Lawn put up three big runs in the top of the third inning with a three hit attack, all singles, by Kyle Gaynor, Dylan Boll, and Collin Gombos.  The Bears defense aided in the big inning, as two consecutive throwing errors by first baseman Andrew Gehringer.  On two attempts to force a runner out at second, Gehringer first threw the ball into left field and on the subsequent play hit the baserunner with the throw, allowing another run to score.  The Owls left the inning fired up and with a three run lead.

Boyertown catcher Josh Schnell led off the bottom of the third with a base hit and reached second on a wild pitch.  Travis Kreitz laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown past the first baseman by Gombos, allowing Schnell to score.  In what turned out to be a very bad inning for the infield on both teams, Gombos had another error on the next play, allowing Chris Werner to take first on the play.  After a Gehringer sacrifice, a Paul Mills groundout netted the Bears their second run of the inning.  A two out RBI single by DH Colby Hartman tied the score up at four.

The Bears jumped out into the lead in the next inning, after a one out walk by Matt Purnell, another stolen base, and an RBI double by Travis Kreitz.  The Owls answered in a big way with their next at-bat, with three runs and three hits.  Gombos started things off with a one out walk, with Erik Bowers following that up with a base hit.  Chris Sponagle ripped an RBI double which also put two runners in scoring position.  Nate Smith didn't waste any time knocking those runners in with a hard hit double which netted him two RBIs.

Boyertown played a bit of their patented small ball to get a run back in the bottom of the fifth.  Gehringer led off with a double.  A sacrifice bunt by Mills and a sacrifice fly by Hartman pulled them back within one.  But, as they had done all night, the Owls answered in the very next at-bat.  With young Dan Woodley on the mound for the Bears, a lead off walk to Gaynor and a fielder's choice put a runner at third with just one down.  Boll increased the lead to two with an RBI single.  Another fielder's choice on the throw home and an RBI base hit by Bowers put the visitors up by three.

Bears reliever Brock Hallman came in to settle down the West Lawn offense by getting the final eight outs for his team without giving up a run.  Owls starter Andy Ravel pitched eight strong innings, throwing 138 pitches for his team. Much to the delight of the visiting crowd, he kept Boyertown off the board for the next three innings before turning things over to Gombos in the ninth.

After some heated moments on and off the field, Bears right fielder Travis Kreitz led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk.  Chris Werner singled as the tension grew on both sides.  Despite ripping the ball, Andrew Gehringer's line drive was snagged by the left fielder for the first out of the inning.  Paul Mills roped a 2 RBI double to bring Boyertown within one.  Colby Hartman delivered one of the biggest hits of the season with an RBI double down the right field line to tie the game and sent the hometown crowd into a frenzy.  After Ronnie Mauger relieved Hartman at second, nine hole hitter Cameron Ferreri blooped a single into right to put runners at the corners.  With no other options, the Owls brought their infield in for lead off hitter Ryan Schwager.  He delivered with a hard hit base hit through the left side to send Boyertown into the winner's bracket final tonight.

Brock Hallman got the win for the Bears, with Gombos taking the loss for the Owls.  Paul Mills and Colby Hartman had 3 RBIs for Boyertown while Travis Kreitz had two.  Smith had 2 RBI for West Lawn, as did Boll.  Boll also delivered four hits for his team.

West Lawn will now take on second seeded Shillington in the second game of the day Sunday, with the loser being knocked out of the tournament.  Boyertown will take on Twin Valley in the winner's bracket final Sunday evening at Owls Field in West Lawn.

Marion Center and Indiana Legion Advance in Indiana County

Posted by Brad Bellas on July 9, 2011 at 5:44 PM

Marion Center and Indiana Legion advanced to the championship series in Indiana County with playoff wins Saturday.  Game 1 is set for 2pm Sunday in Marion Center.  Game 2 will be played in Indiana on Monday at 6pm.  If necessary, Game 3 will be in Marion Center on Tuesday at 6pm.

Indiana Legion [12-10] completed the sweep of regular season champion Blairsville [14-8 league, 14-10 overall] with a 10-2 win.  Nathan Baker pitched a complete game with the help of stellar defensive work by his teammates.  Tyler Grube got the win in Game 1, a 5-3 victory for Indiana Legion, and also tripled to help his own cause.

Marion Center [12-11], the hottest team in the league with 7 wins in its last 8 outings, defeated defending league champion Homer City Post 493 [12-11] by a score of 9-4 to win the series 2-1.  CJ Stiles went the distance to get the win.  The series was highlighted by Marion Center's opportunistic offense, solid defense, and effective pitching by Nick Lamantia, Mike Cavazza, Skyler Eckenrode, and Stiles.  There were also a surprising number of home runs in the series.  For Homer City, Luke Loughner clubbed 2 round trippers, and Jordan Long and Eric Cusimano added 1 each.  Marion Center's Seth Goodlin got in on the act with a home run in Game 1.  Homer City won Game 1 by a score of 8-7, but Marion Center grabbed the momentum with a 10-3 win in Game 2.
