Feature Game: Spring City Tops Pottsgrove

Posted by Legion Baseball on June 8, 2010 at 6:52 AM

Chester County's 10 run mercy rule was in effect Monday night when Pottsgrove traveled to Royersford to take on longtime league power Spring City.  The Red Sox jumped on the visitors early and often, invoking the run rule after just six at-bats.

Pat Medley, Kenny Pierson, and Mike Ocyzpok led the way for Spring City behind the plate, while pitcher Sean Larkin got the win on the mound.

The game was stopped after six and a half innings.

Final score: Spring City 11, Pottsgrove 1

Wyoming Valley League Kicks Off Season

Posted by Legion Baseball on June 7, 2010 at 3:47 PM

Region 5's Wyoming Valley League opened up its 2010 league season earlier this week with a couple games on the schedule.

Greater Pittston topped Hazleton in their opener, 4-0.  Old Forge and Plymouth split a doubleheader, with Old Forge taking the first game 6-2 and Plymouth rallying back for a 14-7 win in the second.

A few games on tap for today, as well.  Make sure to head out to one if you can make it!

Nanticoke at Plains

Back Mountain at Old Forge

Plymouth at Mountain Post

Feature Game: Quakertown vs. Pottstown

Posted by Legion Baseball on June 6, 2010 at 2:47 PM

Quakertown and Pottstown played in one of the most exciting games of the season so far the other night at Sundstrom Field.

Matt Cohen went the distance for the Steelers, surrendering eight hits and three runs on the night.  Pottstown appeared ready to take the game when they lead 3-2 in the top of the seventh.   The usually sure-handed Ben Eckroth committed an error that extended the game and allowed Quakertown to rally for the tie.

Eckroth had the last laugh though, as he had a big chance for redemption in the bottom half of the inning.  Eckroth led off with the score tied 3-3 and sent a towering shot over the left field fence to lead the Steelers to the their first home league win of the season.

Final Score: Pottstown 4, Quakertown 3

Bradford Atop Elk County Standings

Posted by Legion Baseball on June 4, 2010 at 2:53 PM

Bradford has displayed some dominance in Elk County and PA's Region 8 in recent years.  And if their early results are any indication, they'll be a force to be reckoned with again this summer.

Bradford is currently 3-0 in the Elk County League, with recent two-run wins over Kane and Fox Township.

St. Mary's also is undefeated in the young season, with a current record of 2-0 in the league.

Hatfield and Pennridge Off to Quick Starts

Posted by Legion Baseball on June 3, 2010 at 11:22 AM

The Bux-Mont League in Southeastern Pennsylvania's Region 2 has always had a great deal of success on the local and state level.  Hatfield was widely considered one of the favorites to take the state title last year before stumbling in the Region 2 tournament.

This year, Hatfield is off to a fast league start again at 3-0.  Somewhat surprisingly, they are joined by Pennridge at the top of the Bux-Mont.  Pennridge has always been a solid team but has not made the headway in state competitions that some of the stronger teams in the league have made in recent years.

Region 2 is once again shaping up to be what will probably amount to the strongest region, top to bottom, in the entire state.

Feature Story: Jeff Miller, 600th Consecutive Game

Posted by Legion Baseball on June 1, 2010 at 9:14 PM

This a story passed along to us from Troy in Hanover... if you'd like to see a feature on a team or person you know send us a write-up to [email protected] and we'll put it on the front page of the site!

Over the past twenty-eight years, Jeff Miller has not missed a game.  Not a single one.  Jeff serves as an assistant coach, statistician, and field preparer for Hanover Post #14, which is located in York County in Region 4.

On May 28th, in a contest against Suburban York, Jeff coached in his 600th consecutive game.  Jeff epitomizes the dedication and spirit for American Legion Baseball that so many people share with him across Pennsylvania.  Coach Miller has been with the program in both good times and bad, and has served most notably as a mentor to literally hundreds of aspiring athletes throughout the decades.

People like Jeff are why so many fans and players flock to American Legion games across the country.  These coaches don't get paid much, or at all, but dedicate their time and passion to help nurture a new generation of ballplayers.  His presence has not gone unnoticed, as Jeff is a Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame member through the American Legion program.

We salute Jeff for his dedication and service to the betterment of PA American Legion Baseball!

Feel free to leave your well wishes for Jeff in the comments section, they'll surely be passed along to him.

Do You Use Internet Explorer?

Posted by Legion Baseball on May 31, 2010 at 10:15 PM

We're sorry for the inconvenience, but it's out of our hands and we're working to resolve it.

PIAA Playoffs

Posted by Legion Baseball on May 27, 2010 at 4:16 PM

Looking for a score you can't seem to find? It's quite possible the game you're looking for was postponed due to the ongoing PIAA state playoffs.  Legion teams from across the state have delayed some of their scheduled games so they don't interfere with the current high school season.

We'll find out when the games have been rescheduled to and post the results as soon as they happen.

As always, thanks for stopping by!

Update: Internet Explorer Issues

Posted by Legion Baseball on May 27, 2010 at 1:39 PM

So it turns out that those of you running Internet Explorer 8 (the newest version) are not experiencing problems, but those of you on IE 6 or 7 may be.

Though we're still working to fix the problem and have contacted the webs supervisor in hopes of resolving this, please consider downloading the new IE browser from the following link.  We did it last night, it takes just a minute or two, and has a lot more features (and less bugs!) than the older versions.

Internet Explorer Issues

Posted by Legion Baseball on May 26, 2010 at 10:00 PM

It appears that we may be having some issues with the site for those of you using Internet Explorer.  Most notably, the drop down menus tend to go behind the content and ads on the pages and some have some odd markings next to them.

If you're seeing that, please let us know via message or a comment on here so we know for sure if others are having problems.

We're working to resolve those issues... the rest of the internet browsers should be working fine!

Brand New FAQ

Posted by Legion Baseball on May 26, 2010 at 12:44 AM

Not only does that rhyme, but it's also true... we've added a brand new 'frequently asked questions' section to the site.  It is located under the same 'FAQ' link in the navigation bar as before, but now reflects the same formatting as the rest of the site.

Also, we've updated the questions and we think they will be much more useful and pertinent to the questions you may be having about the site.  On that page you can find out who we are, why we're here, how to help, how to contact us, and much much more.  It will give you a glimpse into what we're doing to maintain and update this site everyday.

We hope you'll check it out and comment on this blog to let us know what you think of the site!

Featured Game: Boyertown vs Doylestown

Posted by Legion Baseball on May 23, 2010 at 3:33 PM

We'll be watching as many games as possible throughout the year and will post brief summaries of those games here.  We started off our travels by heading to Boyertown to see the defending state champions take on their yearly opening night opponent, the Doylestown Tigers.

**To see a picture from the game, be sure to check out the 'feature game' section located under the news link in the navigation bar!**

Doylestown jumped out to an early lead before the pressure of Boyertown's patented small-ball offensive approach got the better of the Tigers' defense.  The Bears rallied to put nine runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth.  Despite several big hits from the Tigers throughout the rest of the game, including a two-run homerun over the left field fence, Doylestown never got closer than a six run deficit before dropping a nine run decision.

Boyertown started off their multi-year title defense in a good way, upending the Tigers 16-7.  The Bears put up a plethora of runs despite not hitting many extra base hits.  The story of the game was Doylestown's inability to handle Boyertown's constant bunting and stealing pressure.  The Bears were also aided by a bunch of infield errors and some untimely walks by the Tigers' pitching staff.

Final score: Boyertown 16, Doylestown 7.

Several Regions Updated

Posted by Legion Baseball on May 21, 2010 at 9:29 PM

We've updated Regions 2, 3, 4, and 5 to reflect the new format that the rest of the site will have in the coming days.

As you'll notice, there are now links to each league in the drop down menu for those regions.  The former region-wide standings pages have been converted to region-wide news pages.  To get up to date news on your favorite region, simply click the region name in the navigation bar.  For league standings, scroll over the desired region and click on the league name.

We think this will streamline the site and make it extremely easy to find what you're looking for.  As always, thanks for stopping by and please come back soon!

Don't forget, our newest (and best!) feature will be launched soon, so look out for more news on that!

We think you'll like it a lot... let us know what you think!
